Zipp Equipped Cancellara Captures Olympic Bronze in Beijing
August 9th, 2008
Team CSC Saxo Bank rider Fabian Cancellara was quite surprised that he was able to take the bronze medal Saturday in the Olympic road race after being the only Swiss rider in the race.
On the final descent Cancellara caught up with the favourites group chasing the five escapees, Andy Schleck, Alexandr Kolobnev, Davide Rebellin, Samuel Sanchez and Michael Rogers. And the Swiss tempo specialist quickly took off to catch up with the front group less than two kilometres before the finish.
"I managed to ride exactly the right race. I believe I did everything right which was actually quite simple most of the time, since all I could do was follow the favourites' moves baring in mind I had no team mates. I saw I had to do something otherwise I would not get up there. I knew that I had team mates from Team CSC Saxo Bank up there, but you don't ride with your team mates at the Olympics. I had to do it alone, which shows that I did very well today," concludede Cancellara.
The result brought Cancellara back in Top-5 in the unofficial World ranking from Cycling Quotient, where Team CSC Saxo Bank has 10 riders in Top-90, 5. Fabian Cancellara, 8. Fränk Schleck, 13. Carlos Sastre, 24. Jens Voigt, 26. Gustav Larsson, 36. Alexandr Kolobnev, 45. Andy Schleck, 58. Matti Breschel, 80. Chris Anker Sørensen, 87. Kurt-Asle Arvesen.
