California Kings: Zipp Athletes Win Four Stages in Amgen Tour of California
The biggest professional bicycle race in North America has come to an end and Zipp athletes shone the entire way. It began on Saturday, February 14th when Team Saxo Bank’s Fabian Cancellara won the 2.4 mile prologue by just 1.2 seconds over eventual tour champion Levi Leipheimer. Cancellara donned the leader’s jersey during Stage One where he dropped out of the race with an illness.
Stage 2 brought a second victory for Zipp as Garmin-Slipstream’s Thomas Peterson endured the rough weather and big climbs aboard his Zipp 202s, besting the field for the day’s win.
Wednesday’s Stage 3 brought the first win for the Cervelo Test Team at the Tour of California. Sprinter Thor Hushovd took the stage while riding the all new Zipp 404s featuring the new 88/188 hubset. We recently talked with Thor in a ZippCast as well as after the race in this short video interview.
Yesterday’s Stage 8 brought a fourth stage victory as Frank Schleck of Saxo Bank crossed the line first on his Zipp 404s.
David Zabriskie, three-time U.S. National Time Trial Champion, finished the Amgen Tour of California second overall using his time-trialing skills to position himself among the Tour’s top contenders.
