Top Racers Choose Zipp 303 Cyclocross

Having demonstrated its versatility from the Spring Classics to the Tour de France, the latest version of Zipp’s light weight, rugged 303 wheelset will tackle the 2009-10 cyclocross season with top U.S. racers Katie Compton, Todd Wells, and the Cyclocrossworld.com team of Tim Johnson, Jeremy Powers, and Jamey Driscoll.

Compton, a 5-time US national champion and 2-time world championships medalist, commented, “Cyclocross is the toughest sport in the world on bikes and the riders. I selected the 303 Cyclocross wheelset, the VumaQuad crankset and the SLC2 bar from Zipp because I need my equipment to handle the extreme conditions of cyclocross.”  Compton is also testing the new Tangente High Performance Cork Brake Pad, designed specifically for carbon rims.

Proven by Cervélo TestTeam, Team Saxo Bank, and Garmin-Slipstream on the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix, the fully toroidal rim profile of the 303 tubular wheelset absorbs impacts and vibrations like a leaf spring, and provides superb impact resistance, a comfortable ride quality, and surefooted handling on rough surfaces.

Despite its bombproof durability and stable platform, the 303 Cyclocross is lighter than many dedicated climbing wheelsets at just 1209 grams and provides excellent lateral stiffness when accelerating out of technical corners.

“Cyclocross is all about speed, power, and precision,” said Johnson, a two-time US national champion and the overall winner of the 2008 USGP of Cyclocross series. “Light weight, strong wheels are a necessity, and Jeremy, Jamey, and I think we’ve found the ultimate ‘cross wheel with the Zipp 303.”

Zipp is also looking forward to strong performances on the 303 Cyclocross from Wells, a two-time US national champion riding for Specialized, and Joachim Parbo, the Danish national champion and a consistent performer on the US and World Cup ‘cross circuits. Wells added, “Everyone knows Zipp wheels are very light and stiff but I am really impressed with the width of the rim. Running low pressure in cyclocross it's nice to have a wider gluing surface and a larger rim diameter. I can't wait to get them dirty.”

Other features of the 303 Cyclocross that all riders will appreciate are its wide tire bed that protects against tire damage and an angled brake track that improves brake modulation. It includes Zipp’s new 88 front and 188 rear hubs with 24 front and 24 rear spokes.
