Team Astana to Ride Zipp Wheels in 2010

The Astana Cycling Team, featuring two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador, Tour de France champion Oscar Pereiro, and Alexander Vinokourov will ride Zipp wheels for the 2010 season, the company announced today.

The deal brings a third top-level program to Zipp’s already deep sponsorship roster, which includes Team Saxo Bank and Cervélo TestTeam along with a lineup of triathletes such as Olympic champions Jan Frodeno and Emma Snowsill and U.S. Cyclocross National Champions Tim Johnson and Katie Compton.

Like Team Saxo Bank, Astana will use Specialized bicycles with SRAM components and Zipp wheels.

Zipp Marketing Manager Andy Paskins said, “Zipp is proud of all the athletes that we support and we’re excited to bring Alberto and his teammates into the fold. Plus, our partnership with Specialized has been extremely successful and we’re excited to build on that.”

Contador added, “The wheels are very good, no doubt. I have tried them in the past and have always been very stiff wheels. I really like them.”

Astana riders will have access to Zipp’s wide range of high-performance race wheels, all made by hand in Speedway, Indiana: the 202 climbing wheel; the all-around 303 and 404 models; the 808 and 1080 aero wheels; and the Super-9 disc.

With Contador and 2006 Tour winner Oscar Pereiro riding for Astana, and 2008 winner Carlos Sastre riding for Cervélo, the last three men to claim victory on cycling’s biggest stage will be riding Zipp wheels next year.
