A robust roster - 2012 Tri Season Preview
Zipp’s roster of professional triathletes for 2012 is as robust and global as the sport itself.
Defending Olympic gold medalists Jan Frodeno and Emma Snowsill are among the sport’s stars riding Zipp wheels and components, including the purpose-built line of Firecrest® wheels. Brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee – who also use Zipp Service Course® SL bars with their Boardman frames -- will look to make a statement in their home country at the 2012 London Games.
Two-time Ironman® World Champion Chris “Macca” McCormack also is looking for Olympic success before refocusing on long-course events. Paula Findlay, Barbara Riveros, Andrea Hewitt, Sarah Haskins and Lisa Norden also have sights set on London.
“It’s amazing, such an opportunity to compete at a home Olympics, once in a lifetime experience,” Jonathan Brownlee said. “But it’s just another race; that’s the way I am looking at it. There are so many factors in triathlon and so many tactics and things that can go wrong that to build it up more than just a race means you are not going to race to the best of your ability.”
In long course, Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae is out to regain the Ironman® World Championship – a title she won in 2010 with the help of Zipp wheels. In 2012, Zipp added reigning Ironman® 70.3 World Champion Melissa Rollison to its roster. The list of marquee long-course athletes also includes Linsey Corbin, Pete Jacobs and Marino Vanhoenacker. Rasmus Henning, Jordan Rapp and former pro cyclist Nikki Butterfield are among other names to watch.
“There is really only one goal for the season, and that is to try and win another Ironman world title,” Rinny said of her objectives in 2012. “It would be nice to have a few good races along the way, but the year really is totally setup with Kona as the No. 1 focus.”
