1-2 punch on the cobbles
Impressive power and savvy tactics are a winning combination, especially on Belgian cobblestones.
Niki Terpstra and Sylvain Chavanel of the Omega Pharma – Quick Step Cycling Team finished first and second in textbook smart and aggressive racing in Wednesday’s 199.5km Dwars door Vlaanderen.
With about 30 km left, Terpstra pounced on the Patersberg -- a 365 meter climb with a 20.3 percent max incline – for the solo win, the team’s 24th victory of the season. Chavanel, who earlier worked with Terpstra to reach the breakaway, stayed cool with his teammate ahead before making his own move to take second.
Both men rode Zipp 303 wheels – which, having been ridden to victory in the Tour of Flanders twice, are no stranger to success on Belgian cobbles. Terpstra’s handlebar was the Zipp Service Course SL with a Traditional bend and Chavanel the Zipp Service Course CSL with its Super Short Reach bend – the aluminum bars are stiff, durable and dependable.
“I really rode a great solo in the final kilometers thanks to my perfect bike,” Terpstra said.
