Exergy TWENTY16's McGrath strong in tough San Jose TT
Kristin McGrath’s decision to use Zipp’s 650c size wheels in the Women's Time Trial presented by SRAM at the Amgen Tour of California was a simple one.
“It just works for me. I’m a smaller rider,” said McGrath, who is 165cm, or about 5-foot-5. Indeed, the Exergy TWENTY16 rider placed third in the 31.5 km (19.5 mile) time trial against a field of top women.
The San Jose course was hilly, technical and windy. And while some riders – women as well as men racing in the Amgen Tour of California – opted to switch from a time trial to a road bike for the final steep 3km climb, Kristin stuck with her 650c time trial setup.
“My Felt DA is light enough and I’m comfortable enough climbing on it with Zipp wheels and obviously the SRAM parts,” McGrath said. Friday’s course tested the riders with just about every type of time-trialing terrain possible.
“It’s like three different courses in one. There’s the first part -- it’s rolling. It’s important to get over those with a lot of speed and through the descents but also to realize that there’s a lot more…. You have to gauge your effort. Then you had the flat part of the course. That was just a flat true time trial, headwinds. You really had to dig in and focus on that part. Then you had basically a hill climb at the end.”
