All Out Everything
There’s never been anything that’s middle of the road about the 808 Firecrest. At 82mm deep, it’s all out aero efficiency. Thanks to Zipp’s revolutionary Firecrest technology, the 808 also offers all out performance for crosswind stability. The new Zipp 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher Disc-brake wheelset enhances that speed and stability with the superior performance of disc brakes. Simply put, this is the fastest disc-brake wheelset available.
How you slow down plays an important role in how fast you go. Efficient speed adjustments on technical sections of road are crucial to conserving energy and maintaining speed. Disc-brakes gained prominence in mountain biking and then cyclocross and now are being embraced for road riding and racing. It’s no wonder. The consistency and power of disc brakes provides precision modulation and stopping power, literally at your fingertips. The 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher Disc-brake builds on the legacy of the 808 as the perfect choice for flat to rolling road rides, races, time trials and triathlon. Pair an 808 Firecrest Disc-brake rear wheel with a 404 Firecrest Disc-brake front… Or rock dual 808s for max aero efficiency.
With Firecrest’s unparalleled approach to the wheel’s center of pressure, the 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher also handles crosswinds with the stability you’d normally associate with a much shallower rim. Add to that best-in-class aerodynamic efficiency, and you have what we like to call aero balance. Plus, the wide rim shape provides efficient power transfer along with comfort and durability, making it an excellent choice for just about any terrain and riding style.
The 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher Disc-brake also offers more versatility and options than ever before in a pure road wheel. Disc brakes for road also open a wider range of tire selections, such as 28 or 30mm tires, for improved comfort, handling and rolling resistance. At the center of the 808 Firecrest Disc-brake wheelset is the 77/177D hubset, which offers options for riders to switch wheels from quick-release to thru-axle without tools. The XDR Driver body option allows for expanded cassette ranges including a 10-42.
About the 77/177D hubset:
The 808 Firecrest Disc-brake wheelset comes with a standard 10/11 speed driver body for SRAM®/Shimano® or for Campagnolo®, allowing you to run a wide range of cassettes. For those looking for a wider gear range, or tackling especially extreme terrain, a SRAM XDR driver body for 177D (sold separately) is easily installed to allow for more cassette options. A 1.85mm spacer is included with the XDR driver body and is required for use on the 177D hub. XDR driver body compatible with 11-speed cassettes only.
Each wheel includes 2 sets of Zipp thru-axle end caps, 1 Zipp skewer, 1 Zipp rim tape 700c X 20mm and 1 Zipp core valve extension per wheel
Front wheel: $1,250, €1,300
With the new proprietary Firecrest rim shape in our 202, 303, 404 and 808 Firecrest wheels, Zipp wheels make a bigger difference in more ways than ever. Not only is Firecrest more aerodynamic than any other rim design, it improves handling in crosswinds and overall ride quality.
Our superior Carbon Clincher technology is the culmination of two years of intensive prototyping and testing. We worked with our composites supplier to develop an exclusive heat-resistant resin based on the materials used in motorsports brake systems. This proprietary technology improves heat management so substantially that all Zipp Carbon Clinchers pass stringent CEN safety standards.
ABLC™ (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control)
Advanced Boundary Layer Control (ABLC) refers to the patented and instantly recognizable dimpled pattern found on all of our carbon rims. ABLC smoothes airflow across the rim's surface and is tailored to every model from the 202 to the Super-9 Disc. The third-generation of ABLC has up to four times more dimples than before.
VCLC™ (Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control)
Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control (VCLC) uses a vibration-absorbing material sandwiched between layers of rigid carbon laminate in the rim. When the wheel receives an impact from the road, much of the shock is absorbed by the VCLC system, delivering a 10% reduction in vibration.
Electron Discharge Machining allows us to cut the materials for our rear hub drive internals after they’ve been hardened through heat treating, negating the warping and imprecision caused by the heat-treating process.
Zipp is the only company specifying Swiss made highly specialized ball bearing cartridges. Working with a family owned Swiss bearing manufacturer, Zipp is able to attain a superior level of bearing smoothness and long life. Zipp ball bearings are specified to 10 millionths of an inch tolerance, guaranteeing that they are at least 2.5 times rounder and better matched than most company’s “high precision” balls, and more than five times tighter than most “precision” balls.
