808 Tubular
The 808 changed perceptions about deep-section wheels. At first, its 81mm-deep profile appeared only in time trials and triathlons. Sure enough, it netted numerous Grand Tour stage wins and Kona IM world championships. Still, it didn’t take long before Zipp riders discovered that the 808’s light weight, responsiveness, and solid handing are ideally suited to hilly bike legs, criteriums, field sprints, and long days off the front of the peloton. Now, with the new Firecrest rim shape, the 808 has improved in almost every metric. Its 27mm-wide profile is 15 seconds faster than before over 40km, and now equals or exceeds the performance of any 90mm-deep rim on the market as well as many discs. At high wind angles, the 808’s aero advantage is even greater, yet Firecrest also makes the 808 remarkably stable. Essentially, it provides the speed of a much deeper rim with the handling of a much shallower one. On windy, non-disc-legal course like Kona, that counts for a lot. And with its wider profile, the latest 808 Tubular shows improved lateral stiffness for efficient power transfer and crisp acceleration, yet offers greater comfort and impact resistance than its predecessor. Pro triathletes like Virginia Berasategui and Chris McCormack build their seasons around a few crucial events where aerodynamics are everything. Pro cyclists like Fabian Cancellara and Thor Hushovd log scores of race days every year with huge variations in weather, terrain, and tactics. No matter what approach you take, the 808 Tubular provides top-shelf aerodynamics with a remarkable versatility to take on whatever challenge you’re facing. Available November, 2010

Liberty Sports Reviews The Zipp 808 June 2009
“Are those 808’s?” my fellow breakaway rider gasped as we gained more than 20 seconds on the peloton over a 1km criterium course. I just grinned a devilish grin and pulled through, the intimidating wooooosh sound resonating off him as he slowly faded back to the pack. For the next fifteen laps it was just me and my new favorite breakaway companion, the 2009 Zipp 808 tubulars, head down into the pouring rain making everyone else suffer trying to chase me. Unlike my ill-fated breakaway companion that blew into oblivion, the Zipp 808 wheelset is always begging you to go faster, faster, faster. Click here to read more.
Being Zipp 808. April 2009

"Riding a set of 808 tubs is like going from clay wheels to polyurethane ones on a skateboard. You were used to the clay and it worked fine and you grew immune to it's limitations. However, when you latch on something that is steps ahead of what you have, it makes you wonder why you didn't make the jump sooner. That's the feeling you get on the 808s compared to a basic wheel." Tim Schamber, ROAD, May 2009.

Here’s the bottom line with the Zipp 808s: if you could inject the performance boost they give, they’d be outlawed.

Firecrest
With the new Firecrest rim shape in our 404 and 808 Tubulars and Carbon Clinchers, Zipp wheels make a bigger difference in more ways than ever. Not only is Firecrest more aerodynamic than any other rim design, it improves handling in crosswinds, wheel strength, and overall ride quality. Read More
ABLC™ (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control)
Advanced Boundary Layer Control (ABLC) refers to the patented and instantly recognizable dimpled pattern found on most of our rims. ABLC smoothes airflow across the rim's surface and is tailored to every model from the 202 to the Sub9 disc. 2009 sees the third-generation of ABLC, with up to 4 times more dimples than before. VCLC™ (Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control)
Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control (VCLC) uses a vibration-absorbing material sandwiched between layers of rigid carbon laminate in the rim. When the wheel receives an impact from the road, much of the shock is absorbed by the VCLC system, delivering a 10% reduction in vibration. Read More
Carbon Bridge™
Carbon Bridge uses a Kevlar® thread in a co-axial helix stitch to bind sheets of carbon to each other in our tubular rims. Because Kevlar is 350% more impact resistant than carbon, it can disperse shock more evenly throughout the carbon laminate, making for a rim that is practically bulletproof. In particular, Carbon Bridge reduces the vulnerability of the rim's tire bed, the area most susceptible to damage from impact. Read More
88/188 Hub Technology
Every aspect of our 88 and 188 hubs sets a new benchmark. The standard steel bearings are the roundest in the industry. The 17mm axle is the stiffest of any road hub we've tested. The wire EDM-cut hub internals are the most precise. The SHIFT spoke hole technolgoy is the most durable. When it comes to precision and performance, there's really no comparison. Read More |
