Giro D'Italia Mid-Race Update

Culminating in today¹s epic time trial at Cinque Terre, the first twelve stages of the 100th Giro d¹Italia have provided plenty of ups and downs for Cervélo TestTeam, Garmin-Slipstream, and Team Saxo Bank.
Having started the Giro with understated ambitions, Cervélo's Carlos Sastre moved up a spot on G.C. in both Tuesday¹s "queen stage" and the time trial. He now sits 5th overall at the Giro as he prepares to defend his Tour de France title.
After finishing second in the opening team time trial, Garmin-Slipstream¹s hopes took an unfortunate turn when team leader Christian Vande Velde crashed out of the race two days later. Since then, Tyler Farrar has been knocking on the door of his first Grand Tour stage win.
Team Saxo Bank¹s Giro has thus far been fairly quiet. After a rough spring, Fabian Cancellara showed improving form before making an early exit after stage 11.
Elsewhere in the cycling world, Cervélo's Thor Hushovd won the opening stage at the Volta a Catalunya and Saxo Bank¹s Matti Breschel won stage 2. Cervélo's Regina Bruins wore the leader's jersey after five stages at the Tour de l¹Aude, where Kristin Armstrong picked up a stage win.
