Contador and Schleck go 1-2 on the Tourmalet

Finishing side by side atop the legendary Col du Tourmalet, Andy Schleck (Team Saxo Bank) took his second stage win of the Tour while Alberto Contador (Astana) ably defended the yellow jersey. Climbing through the mist on Zipp 202s, the two best riders of this year's Tour de France matched each other perfectly with Andy doing most of the pace-setting and Alberto choosing not to contest the finish.

Barring a surprise in Saturday's 52km time trial, Alberto appears likely to win his third Tour in the last four years – but Andy has vowed that he'll fight all the way to Paris.

Carlos Sastre (Cervélo TestTeam) also rode bravely today. The 2008 Tour winner – aided by teammate Ignatas Konovalovas – spent more than 100km off the front of the peloton in an attempt to bridge up to the day's early breakaway.
