Terrific TTT for OPQS

Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Pro Cycling keepings following up one great victory after another. The latest example is OPQS’s triumph in the 18.5km team time trial opening this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico.

Mark Cavendish led the squad across the line to finish with an average speed of 54.91 kilometers per hour (34.12 mph), a performance good enough to beat one of their top TTT rivals, ORICA-GreenEDGE, by 11 seconds. That means Cavendish wears the race leader’s Maglia Azzura blue jersey and Michal Kwiatkowski the Maglia Blanca white jersey for the race’s best young rider. For OPQS, the win comes just after Kwiatkowski took a brilliant victory in the Strade Bianche in Italy on Saturday and Guillaume Van Keirsbulck won the final stage of the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen on Sunday.

For the time trials and team time trials, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Pro Cycling rides Zipp Firecrest wheels and Zipp Super-9 Disc Tubular and Super-9 Carbon Clincher Discs. The team also rides SRAM RED and Quarq Power Meters for Specialized. In road races, the team also rides Zipp bars, stems and seatposts. The team has a well-deserved reputation for being technologically minded and systematic in its approaches to equipment, races and strategy. That approach was evident in comments from UCI World Time Trial Champ Tony Martin released by OPQS after Wednesday TTT victory: “On paper we had the strongest guys, we had the perfect preparation for the course  as we were able to pass through it multiple times at race speed. So, the preparation was perfect and with the team being so strong and so motivated, it was actually an easy day. Not easy as in we weren't suffering, but we were just so focused in the head we were basically calm this morning.  We stuck to the plan. Actually I think we did almost exactly the same performance as we did in training. We just went a bit faster.”
