Martin rides new SL-70 Aero to victory

Zipp’s newest carbon road bar, the SL-70 Aero, already has made a bit of history. This week Tony Martin of Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Professional Cycling rode the SL-70 Aero to a solo victory in stage 2 of Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco, a UCI WorldTour event.
The win marked the first professional victory aboard for a Zipp carbon drop handlebar. For mass-start races, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step typically rides Zipp Service Course SL bars along with Zipp stems and seatposts. The team also rides Zipp wheels.
Martin, the world time trial champ, is always looking for a competitive edge. He first used the SL-70 Aero at the Prologue of Tour of Dubai in February. “The Zipp SL-70 Aero is the closest thing to get to the position of TT bike even on the road,” Martin said in March when the SL-70 Aero was publicly launched.
Zipp benefits from collaborating with Omega Pharma – Quick-Step, one fo the sport’s most technologically minded teams, whether it’s the team’s switch to using the Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Clincher as a primary training wheel or picking strategic situations for the new SL-70 Aero.
“This bar is the perfect mix of aerodynamics and stiffness with ergonomic shape. It’s comfortable and at the same time proved to be the fastest bar in the Zipp collection,” Rolf Aldag, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step’s sport and development manager, said of the SL-70 Aero. “We really appreciate the effort of Zipp to keep on developing new outstanding product made to even increase our performance and our chances to win races. Another example of Zipp commitment is the Carbon Clinchers that we use for training instead of traditional aluminum wheels. This type of clincher permits us to simulate the race conditions in terms of handling in cross wind and braking in wet and dry conditions without using the Tubular wheels that normally we use in races.”
