Marcel Kittel on being a pro

Marcel Kittel knows a thing or two about being pro. He’s got the sprint. He’s got the wins. He’s got the hair. So we took time at the recent Amgen Tour of California to talk with Team Katusha Alpecin’s German superstar sprinter about what sets pro cyclists apart from the rest of us. Thanks to Marcel for his fun answers on pros vs. recreational cyclists...

It's a business

“Oh, I believe the goals and ambitions are unique in terms of that we (professional) riders would like to compete successfully on the highest world tour level. For sure recreational riders have goals and dreams of their own as well, but the ability and choice to simply relax and enjoy the ride, if they wish so.”

Dietary discipline

“Weight! It’s definitely an aspect which we need to keep in mind at all times.”

Pros have the best bikes, but do so some recreational riders

“Equipment, I don’t see a difference (in equipment) compared to recreational riders and the top professionals. I’ve seen wicked fast bikes on side of recreational riders.”

Pros are faster (surprise!)

“I really hope we can still ride a bit faster…”  (Marcel is smiling)

“The (team) support we get here is simply amazing and I can see a big difference here to recreational riders.”
