This one-of-a-kind bike from Irish builder FiftyOne Bikes drew plenty of attention at last week’s North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Sacramento, Calif. We wanted to share with you a few details about the bike’s unique touches and specifications.
“It’s the biggest bike we have done to date,” said Aidan Duff, CEO of FiftyOne Bikes. “We used a new plasma treatment on this bike.”
Indeed, much about this bike speaks to the potential strength of carbon for larger riders. FiftyOne Bikes recently began using a new patented “Plasma” treatment to better join the ends of the carbon tubes. The controlled polymer ablation process (CPA) allows a full carbon-to-carbon bond with greater adhesion. This process has shown a 21 percent increase in shear strength with no weight penalty, according to FiftyOne Bikes. It is available on all of their frames.
To complete the build, Duff selected 303 NSW Disc-brake wheels with Zipp Tangente Speed R28 tires. With a 45mm rim depth and 28.9mm max width, these wheels are a natural choice for a larger rider looking for wheels that are versatile and spin up to speed in a flash. Zipp Master Wheel Builder Nic James laced up Joshua’s wheels himself.
The bike features Zipp’s pro proven Service Course SL-80 round-top bar, long a favorite of pro racers. Rounding out the cockpit, is a 130mm Service Course SL stem and 20mm setback Service Course SL seatpost. The choice of alloy here is a smart one to optimize light weight with durability.
As for components, only the latest and greatest: SRAM RED eTap AXS.
This is a hand-built bike, so expect some inspiring custom gold-colored touches. On the top tube, is “AJBXNG,” signaling the rider and his sport. On the stem is a nod to the worth ethic required to become world champ, “258” means 25 hours a day, 8 days a week—more than 24/7.
The headtube features a lion symbolizing Great Britain and Joshua’s need to “Stay Hungry.” The 126.96.36.199 on the chainstay signifies the World Champ’s status as second to no one.
“We are honored to have partnered with AJ and his team at 258 Management on this build,” Duff said. “He is the epitome of class and has that rare breed of talent, unwavering work ethic and humility all in one.”
Duff said the plan is to present the bike to Joshua at his London gym before he travels to the United States for his June 1 bout with American Jarrell Miller.
