PODCAST EXCERPTS WITH ZIPP ENGINEER BEN WAITE
What is your one go-to wheel-set?
“When I look at my equipment choice, I always try to look at it in the lens of Zipp’s mission statement—to make cyclists faster. At almost every meeting here at Zipp, whether it is sales, products, engineering, manufacturing, whatever, the presenter will put up an initial slide of our mission statement. We kind of ingrain that into every aspect of our jobs, so it kind of makes sense to ingrain that into our wheel selection.”
What can Carbon wheels do that aluminum cannot?
“Carbon does such a good job at getting rid of the constraints that aluminum has in manufacturing. With carbon, you have different strength properties based on the orientation of the material. You can totally change the stiffness or strength of the rim in the desired orientation by changing the angle of fiber without adding any weight. That is really how carbon can shine. In a way the design possibilities of carbon are endless. If you were to draw something up with cad in a rim shape, no matter how crazy it looks, we can basically make it. I think our 454 and 858 show that because it would be so hard to make that into an aluminum wheel.”
How do you recommend people think about rim depth in relation to the type of athletes they are?
“In the end, it comes down to rider comfort: How comfortable they are handing a windy situation, and their confidence to stay in the drops or down in the aero bars.”
